Many people have heard that people in animal welfare do not adopt black cats out during the Halloween season. Now this has spread to all white cats as well. This color has appeal to Satanists for it's representation of wholesomeness and virginity.

White cats are well-liked and easy to adopt, but when rescues hold back adoptions the rate of white cats being euthanized skyrockets.

As someone who has been in the animal welfare field for 20 years I have experience running shelters and I have recently started my own rescue. For every animal in my care it is important to find the right forever home. For all these years I would cease adopting black and white cats throughout the Halloween season. When someone would inquire about a cat with these colors I would let them know that they were not available until after October ended.

Each Halloween I would simply ignore the fact that numerous black and white cats were in foster homes for an extra month. I would ignore the euthanasia lists that I received from the county shelters that listed loads of black and white cats and kittens. I was simply doing what every other rescue did, right? I was saving all those black and white cats from the "bad guys." Wrong. Because of me more cats of those colors died. Best Friends Animal Rescue issued a gentle challenge to animal welfare organizations this month when they wrote about all the black cats being euthanized because rescues refused potential adopters.

After being in animal rescue for years, you get a gut sense about people and you know when to deny an adoption. Adoption processes are unique for each organization but usually involve screenings in writing, in person and sometimes even a visit to the home. Why do we stop doing this in October? Do we really think that every person walking in the door wants to do our black or white cats harm?

If you get a phone call from someone who only wants a black cat or only wants a white cat then you can ask why. If someone comes and meets the beautiful Turkish Angora with the stunning green eyes and they hold her and cuddle with her and fall in love, why would you deny just on principle?

There are people who want to do harm to animals. Most of them are not coming into a rescue to pay for an animal they are going to later discard. There are so many strays and ferals running around they could simply pick one of them.

Shortly after the start of the school year children begin to talk of the next major holiday, Halloween. There is normally an undercurrent about who will have the most popular characters used in Halloween costumes. When parents consider the upcoming costumes the first thing that comes to their minds is the cost.

The thing is, most kids really only wear the costume one night of the year. To spend any significant amount of money on it would simply seem irresponsible and wasteful to many people. Of course, should you find other uses for it throughout the year, then it gets easier to reconcile the expense. If your child is young enough, you could think about adding the costume to the trunk of dress-up clothes in their bedroom.

This holiday is a really big deal for most children. The cost makes no difference to them. Actually, children can at times become very competitive with each other for the best attire on that particular day of the year. Lasting impressions are formed in their minds about how people react to them in costume. They tend to remember Halloween year to year very well.

The characters that most children ask for often come from their favorite movies, or their favorite television shows. The licensed character apparel can get really pricey. Should there be no way around buying the actual, genuine article, there a just a couple of ways to get what you are looking for at a discount. You can do your best to anticipate what size you will need a year ahead and purchase the costumes right after Halloween when they will be on clearance.

Another way that you can save money on these is to check in the thrift stores and consignment stores well ahead of time. As the holiday approaches these variety of retailers will run very low on all costumes, if they have any left at all. You may need to start checking their selection six to eight weeks early in order to take advantage of what they offer.

In the event that you are a creative sort of person, you can always try your hand at creating the costume yourself. Check your local arts and crafts, or fabric store, and you are certain to find the perfect materials for the job.

If sewing is your niche than this should really be a no-brainer for you. The patterns for the same things you can buy in the store are easily found at your fabric store. Watch how much you spend, though, as sometimes taking this route can become more costly than the store bought method. Should your child need a more custom fit, the actual cost will make no real difference.

Using ordinary clothes is a stroke of genius, if you can figure out a way to do it. By combining it with the right make-up and wig it will be truly unique and just the thing your little one had in mind. All in all, no matter which method you employ, your added efforts will ensure that your child has a wonderful Halloween.
